Kardamena (Greek: Καρδάμενα), is a small Greek village 7 km from Kos Island International Airport at Antimachia, situated mid-way along the south coast of the island of Kos. Once a small fishing village, it has emerged as one of the most popular summer destinations, especially for British tourists, over the past two decades, offering scores of pubs and restaurants, bars and night clubs and water sports facilities. It reported a population of 1,783 inhabitants at the 2001 census and has a land area of 35.150 km².

Kardamaina is built on the site of the ancient settlement of Alasarna. During the 2nd century BC, Alasarna was an important urban center with one thousand citizens, to whom the slaves and the metics should be added.

The archaeological excavations have brought to light some impressive ruins. A Temple of Apollo, an extensive Early Christian settlement (from the very few known in Greece), as well as four basilicas that belong to the same period. Also many stone objects of everyday use (millstones, tools, vases, vessels, etc.), mostly made of volcanic and sedimentary rocks have been recovered so far.

“brilliant holiday”

well we arrived at the Sunbeam on June 11th, after a good flight from Birmingham, to be met by the proprietor Andreas, who was first class all week, nothing to much trouble for him. we had a small blip concerning our room, but he soon solved that.
we we given room 203, which had a huge balcony , with a sea view and views of the ships coming and going, also another balcony on the front, but we left that one alone , as a birds nest . was built in the corner , and the chicks were in there.
first port of call was to visit the calypso Bar, to see our friends , Ilias, Katerina, Paul and Maria, and Nikos, who we have known for 22 years.
after a decent sleep, we made our way to the beach, which is down four steps, from the restaurant.
we then decided to have breakfast, which is one of the best full English anywhere, 2 Bacon , 2 eggs, sausage, beans, tomatoes, hash brown, mushrooms, and black pudding, if you want it, 2 toast and jam, croissant, a biscuit with tea or coffee, and orange juice, and for 5 and half euro was value for money.
then back on the sunbeds, which are free, we had a light snack at lunchtime and a drink.
at night we went to different restaurants, we have used over the years, Adelphi, Ariadni, Annas, Manos, and Faros, where our friend from Costas and Paradise, Andreas now works, good food and drink in all of them,
a superb week was spoilt by a 3hours 40 mins delay at the airport
a great week, thanks Andreas for your kind hospitality, we will be back there
