A good friend, a co-worker, a brother died on Friday Dec 18.

With deepest sympathy to all friends and family in KD..
ReplyDeleteAndreas single-handedly represented the warmth, kindness and relaxed nature with which Greece welcomes its guests.
...never before after having been served a drink, when I tried to pay, did anyone just smile, shrug their shoulders and say "... don't worry.. give it me later..".
He was the first Greek I met, the first time I went back in 2013/14. I had just gone through 3 years of a living hell thanks to an unwanted divorce.
I'd gone into deep depression and had pretty much lost hope.
Some people I knew at the time took me with them to Kardamena, telling me it would be good for me and I remember we landed in the evening and after arriving at the Sunbeam, just dropped our cases in our rooms and came downstairs to sit in the warmth, with a gentle cool breeze.. and I was introduced to the man with the lovely smile.
Andreas served us. All of us. Across very many years of what would probably be tens of thousands of people who have crossed his path.
He served every one of us.. nothing was too hard or too much to ask for and at any time day or night he made himself available to people's needs.
But as if that wasn't enough, he did it in such a way as to make you feel that he was your friend - not just a customer or tourist. But it wasn't for the money.. whilst making a living in the Greek Islands certainly in the past 10 years has been very hard, Andreas kept it personal. He WAS your friend. Really. And you could laugh and joke with him as much as you liked.. this guy would do anything for anybody.
Very rarely in life these days do we meet people who although in contact with for just a short time, make such a profound impression, of happiness and care towards others.
He wasn't a prime minister or some great music artist or film star, but Andreas was the one who if you stayed at the Sunbeam, you knew he would welcome you with open arms, genuinely make you feel like you were family and move heaven and earth to ensure that your stay was pleasant and memorable. Greece lost a great man today.
And I think many of us would benefit much, were we take a leaf or two from his book on how to live and treat others.
Andreas.. for me you were, and always will be the friendly smiling face of Greece. May you fish the waters of heaven, in peace and the light of The Lord Jesus.
